Mary Schofield is licensed to practice law in the state of California. She is a member of the El Dorado County Bar Association, currently serving on its board of directors as immediate past president.
She earned her Juris Doctorate from Northwestern California University School of Law and has a Bachelor of Science in Law from Northwestern California University and an Associate of Arts in Humanities from Glendale Community College.
Mary is a longtime advocate of private and home education in California, having worked as a private school consultant for many years prior to becoming an attorney. She remains active in the home schooling community, serving "of counsel" with the Home School Legal Defense Association and on the board of directors for the Christian Home Educators Association of California, speaking at conferences, and advocating for parental rights. She is the author of The High School Handbook: Junior and Senior High School at Home, which is a manual for homeschoolers, and she has been a presenter at home school conventions across the United States and in Japan.
In addition to her work as an attorney and private education consultant, Mary has taught at her alma mater, NWCU, since 2007, and is now the Academic Dean. She is also qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales, though she does not currently practice law there and does not have an active practicing certificate.
Mary currently carries only a small caseload in California, as she splits her time between her position at Northwestern California University, practicing law, and spending time with her family.
Mary and her husband Paul both grew up in La Crescenta, a foothills community just north of Los Angeles. They moved to El Dorado County in 1989, where they lived in Somerset for nearly 20 years, then moved to Shingle Springs to be closer to their children and grandkids. They enjoy spending their free time with their family, traveling, camping, and kayaking.
